In 1823 John L. Gilliland founded a glass company that came to be known as the Brooklyn Flint Glass Works.
He made fine quality cut, pressed, and household glassware, receiving awards at several exhibitions.
Amory Houghton, Sr., purchased the Glass Works in 1864, then moved the company to Corning in 1868 lured by lower operating costs and local financing.
The name was changed to Corning Flint Glass Works, incorporating in 1875 as Corning Glass Works.
